What should I be mindful of when selecting an ERP Consulting Technology firm (A consulting firm that would help with the vendor selection)?

I would give you two pieces of advice:

1 - Hiring an ERP consultant for any purpose develops a partnership. In order for this to be successful the personality of consultant and client must match. This will not be the case if, as a client, you do not define your goals for the consultancy. Most importantly this partnership will fail if you do not do your research - make sure you obtain references from previous clients.

2 - At the end of the day, the decision of selecting an ERP vendor is still yours to make, too many people expect the consultant to make this decision. They can advise you and provide you with the facts, but you are the one who has to live with this decision so make sure you are ready to make it.

I agree with Alan. The section of a consultant should not be to off-load the work and involvement of the key stakeholders in your company for the selection of a great ERP system. The consultant may help coordinate and provide guidance but only you know your business needs, staff capabilities and future goals of your company. The hard work needs to come from the people who will ultimately rely on the new software. The consultant should have expertise in your field of business and know what ERP systems work best for what your tying to achieve. Remember there are hundreds of ERP solutions in the marketplace and some may be more suited to your needs than others. Customization is also an issue for most clients. They feel buying an ERP system should be enough. Each company may have processes that require some level of custom work on the ERP software. This might involve connecting to third party systems you want to keep or to support unique business processes that you want to continue. Keep 10% to 20% of the budget for add-ons and customization of the system to fully fit your needs.
